Mozzarella Cheese Skulls Recipe

4.9 from 120 reviews

Fun and spooky mozzarella cheese skulls made by softening mini mozzarella balls in silicone molds, perfect for Halloween-themed appetizers or party snacks. These bite-sized treats are easy to prepare by baking the cheese just until soft enough to shape and then chilling to hold their form.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Mini Mozzarella Balls (Ciliegine), about 1 ball per skull
  • Silicone molds (preferably heat/oven safe, shaped like skulls or any fun shape)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the mozzarella balls.
  2. Prepare mozzarella balls: Blot each mini mozzarella ball with a paper towel to remove any moisture. Place one mozzarella ball into each cavity of the silicone mold.
  3. Bake the mozzarella: Bake the mozzarella balls at 350°F for 8-10 minutes until they are just soft enough to spread but not melted completely.
  4. Shape the skulls: Using the back of a spoon, gently press the softened mozzarella into the mold to take on the skull shape. If there is excess moisture, blot it off with a paper towel carefully.
  5. Chill and unmold: Refrigerate the molds for about 10 minutes or until the mozzarella cools and firms up enough to unmold easily. Carefully remove each mozzarella skull from the mold.

Notes

  • Use mini mozzarella balls reffered to as ciliegine for the best shape and size.
  • Ensure your silicone molds are heat-resistant and oven-safe before baking.
  • Do not overbake the mozzarella to prevent it from melting too much and losing shape.
  • Chilling after baking helps the skulls to firm up for easy unmolding.
  • These can be served as fun cheese snacks, added to salads, or used as creative garnishes.
