Ingredients

  • 1 seedless watermelon (organic if possible)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the watermelon: Wash the outside of the watermelon thoroughly to remove any dirt or residues.
  2. Trim the watermelon ends: Cut off both ends of the watermelon to create a stable base for easier handling.
  3. Remove the rind: Stand the watermelon upright and slice away the rind. You may leave a thin layer of white rind if preferred.
  4. Slice the watermelon: Cut the fruit into slabs about 1/4 inch thick for uniform dehydration.
  5. Cut into pieces: Slice the slabs into strips or small bite-sized pieces appropriate for your dog’s size.
  6. Arrange on trays: Place the watermelon slices on dehydrator trays or on parchment-lined baking sheets if using an oven.
  7. Dehydrate in dehydrator: Set the dehydrator to 135°F (57°C) and dry the watermelon slices for 8 to 12 hours until they reach a chewy texture.
  8. Dehydrate in oven: Set the oven to the lowest temperature (150–170°F / 65–75°C), crack the door open slightly for airflow, and dry the slices for 6 to 10 hours, flipping them halfway to ensure even drying.
  9. Cool and store: Allow the jerky to cool completely, then store it in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Ensure watermelon is seedless to avoid choking hazards for dogs.
  • Check jerky periodically during dehydration to prevent over-drying or burning.
  • Store jerky in an airtight container in a cool, dry place; refrigerate for longer shelf life.
  • Always offer jerky treats in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
  • Do not use sugar or additives to keep the treat natural and healthy for dogs.
