These Easy Homemade Garlic Knots are soft, flavorful bread knots brushed with a savory garlic butter mixture and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Perfect as a side or appetizer, they are simple to prepare with common pantry ingredients and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1½ cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 3½ cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon parsley, minced
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast together in a bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy, indicating it’s active and ready to use.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until the dough is smooth and elastic. To make it easier, you can use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Allow the dough to rise for 10 minutes in a warm place.
  3. Shape the Dough: On a floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough in half and then into strips approximately 8-10 inches long.
  4. Form the Knots: Take each strip and roll it between your hands to form a rope. Tie each rope into a knot shape.
  5. Second Rise: Place the garlic knots on a greased baking sheet spaced apart and allow them to rise for another 10 minutes to become fluffier.
  6. Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the knots for 15-20 minutes or until they turn golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Prepare Garlic Butter: While baking, melt the butter and mix it with garlic powder, minced parsley, and olive oil until well combined.
  8. Brush and Serve: As soon as the garlic knots come out of the oven, brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle grated parmesan cheese over the top and serve warm.

Notes

  • Make sure your water is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • You can substitute garlic powder with fresh minced garlic for a stronger flavor.
  • If you want a softer crust, cover the knots with a clean kitchen towel after baking while they cool slightly.
  • Parmesan cheese can be omitted or replaced with mozzarella for a different twist.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat before serving for best texture.
